Today, Canadian astronaut Joshua Kutryk took off for the International Space Station. Wondering what that has to do with you? Well, on board is Paratus Medical, a technology whose story began several years ago… right here at Hôpital Charles-Le Moyne.
At the time, Dr. Frédéric Lemaire, an emergency physician, had an idea: to create a tool that would give healthcare professionals quick access to reliable medical knowledge when they need it most.
To develop it, he needed your help. Thanks to your donations, a first pilot project was launched at Hôpital Charles-Le Moyne: EZResus. Remember it?
Then the idea took off. And what a journey it has been!
EZResus grew, won the grand prize in the Canadian Space Agency and Impact Canada’s Deep Space Healthcare Challenge in 2024, and eventually gave rise to Paratus Medical.
And today, that technology has gone to space. 🚀
It will help explore how astronauts can perform medical assessments more independently when access to specialists is limited and communications with Earth are delayed.

Saving Even More Lives in Canada’s Far North

Thanks to you, EZResus 2.0, which supports communities in Quebec’s Far North in collaboration with the Tulattavik and Inuulitsivik health centres, has made significant progress and improved access to care for Indigenous communities.
The Cree Board of Health and Social Services of James Bay joined the application’s users, further demonstrating the relevance of EZResus 2.0 for Indigenous communities in Quebec.
The EZResus 2.0 team worked to strengthen continuity in critical care, from remote regions all the way to Sainte-Justine Hospital, in collaboration with the Centre intégré de santé et de services sociaux de la Côte-Nord and the medical transportation company Aéromédical.
In collaboration with and drawing on the expertise of the Canadian Space Agency, a prototype was tested with a Cree community. The prototype integrates tools and protocols designed to support hunters, trappers and isolated families, with assistance from nurses via radio. This adaptation has helped make crucial information more accessible in geographically isolated settings.
The year ended with a major milestone: Indigenous Services Canada confirmed that it will deploy EZResus 2.0 to 1,000 nurses working across Northern Canada. The application will provide real-time support for complex emergencies in settings with limited resources — without requiring an Internet connection.

Je n’ai pas assez de mots pour exprimer ma gratitude à l’Agence spatiale canadienne pour avoir invité notre équipe à visiter le siège social de l’ASC.
Nous parlons de 3 développeurs, 2 membres de notre conseil d’administration, 6 pharmaciens, 3 intensivistes, 1 infirmière praticienne en néonatalogie et 4 médecins urgentistes!
L’intensité était palpable! Nous avons hâte de mettre EZResus en orbite. Plus d’informations à venir prochainement !

Partnership with Mila

Congratulations to Dr. Frédéric Lemaire, who announced a partnership with Mila, the largest artificial intelligence research institution in Québec!
This partnership will support the development and deployment of AI in its application EZResus.
It will take the form of JARVIS, a resuscitation support tool able to instantaneously answer the logistical questions of people on the ground through a vocal interface.
This will lead to even efficiency in a context where every minute counts!
Deep Space Healthcare Challenge winner

The EZResus apphas won the Canadian Space Agency’s Deep Space Healthcare Challenge. The goal of the competition, judged by a panel of experts, was to develop new healthcare technologies for remote communities and crews on space missions.
The app they designed makes it easier to administer medication to all patients in emergency situations.

I’m even more grateful now that EZResus, the new version of EZDrips, is a finalist in the Canadian Space Agency’s Deep Space Healthcare Challenge. This is incredible news that I couldn’t wait to share with you!
I’m very happy to share this remarkable recognition with you! It’s because of you that we were able to continue developing the app. And you’ve been a partner since the very start. Thank you for having believed in my project that has been helping patients and healthcare workers at Hôpital Charles-Le Moyne’s ER since day 1.
My appreciation is a testament to the crucial role you play when it’s time to invest in innovative pilot projects. Indeed, you’re a very precious ally in driving the development of our hospitals. And to improving the population’s access to health care.
