EZREsus and Dr. Frédéric Lemaire, the big winners of the Deep Space HealthCare Challenge!

Life-saving app created by doctor at Hôpital Charles-Le Moyne wins Canadian Space Agency award

The EZResus app, created by an emergency physician at Hôpital Charles-Le Moyne, has won the Canadian Space Agency’s Deep Space Healthcare Challenge. The goal of the competition, judged by a panel of experts, was to develop new healthcare technologies for remote communities and crews on space missions.

EZResus (formerly EZDrips) was developed by Dr. Frédéric Lemaire to save more lives in emergency departments. When Dr. Lemaire realized that a newborn baby’s life depended on time-consuming calculations still done by hand on a scrap of paper, he quickly assembled a team of volunteer doctors and experts at Hôpital Charles-Le Moyne and other university teaching hospitals.

The app they designed makes it easier to administer medication to all patients in emergency situations. EZResus tells doctors what equipment, dose, concentration and flow rate to use, and tailors the information to the patient’s specific characteristics.

Developed and used at Hôpital Charles-Le Moyne for several years now, this revolutionary, multi-award-winning app is now being used by more than 5,000 doctors in 29 countries around the world. This award is proof that EZResus could even support medical emergencies in space!

“This is incredible news—a childhood dream come true! The recognition is wonderful, of course, but more than that, this is an amazing opportunity for us to keep perfecting the app and getting it out to as many communities as possible, and one day very soon, to the astronauts on space missions. What really matters at the end of the day is being able to save more lives during the first hour of resuscitation”, stresses Dr. Frédéric Lemaire.

Throughout this exciting adventure, Dr. Lemaire has always had the unwavering support of the Fondation Hôpital Charles-Le Moyne.

“Hospital foundations are the driving force behind health transformation. From day one, we always believed in this project and in Dr. Lemaire’s passion and vision. But above all, we believe in the potential of healthcare innovation to improve patient access to care. This recognition is proof that our foundations play a crucial role when it comes to investing in promising pilot projects like EZResus—and that they are valuable allies of governments in accelerating the development of our hospitals”, emphasizes Nathalie Boudreau, President and Executive Director, Fondation Hôpital Charles-LeMoyne.

The Centre de recherche Charles-Le Moyne also supported Dr. Lemaire in developing the app.

“The CISSS de la Montérégie-Centre is extremely proud of this major success story to come out of Hôpital Charles-Le Moyne. It is a testament to the creativity, passion and commitment of Dr. Lemaire and his colleagues, who combined their expert knowledge with technology to save human lives. This win attests to the spirit of innovation that is so vital to our organization”, says Maryse Poupart, President and CEO, CISSS de la Montérégie-Centre.
