When the silent pandemic becomes personal

“We thought the infection would be treated quickly. But the antibiotic didn’t work.”

We thought the worst was behind us. The heart surgery had been a success.

An hour later, the Hospital called us back. My father was in respiratory distress. The doctors intubated him and placed him in a medically induced coma. Tests multiplied. His condition deteriorated rapidly. Nothing seemed to stop the infection.

The doctors eventually identified the bacteria. A bacterium resistant to antibiotics. His heart stopped a few moments later.

My father, Denis Hébert, was a very active man. He loved tennis, cycling, and had even climbed Machu Picchu after the age of 70. And yet…

Some bacteria have become extremely difficult to treat. That day, we learned this the hardest way. My father died from it.

My father strongly believed in giving back to the community. During his lifetime, he even created a foundation to support various causes, including healthcare.

Today, being involved with the Foundation and supporting Dr. Haraoui’s research here at Hôpital Charles-Le Moyne is a way to honour his legacy. It is a way to act against this silent pandemic.

I hope you will join me in advancing this research.

“So no other family has to go through what we did.”
