Thoracoscopy performed for the first time at Hôpital Charles-Le Moyne

June 15, 2023

GOOD NEWS! On June 15, 2023, Dr. Katia Carle-Talbot, respirologist at Hôpital Charles-Le Moyne, and the members of the clinical team, successfully performed the Hospital’s first thoracoscopy.

The procedure conducted with a thorascope, a specialized device acquired thanks to the generosity of donors, was performed in the new endoscopy rooms at Hôpital Charles-Le Moyne, funded with support from Fondation Hôpital Charles-LeMoyne.

The CISSS de la Montérégie-Centre is the third facility in Québec to use this technology to diagnose pleural diseases, in particular cancer.

Also called medical thoracoscopy, this one-hour procedure uses a camera to view the pleura. Its main function is to perform pleural biopsies.

The examination, which used to require a general anesthetic and a few days in hospital, now takes less than half a day. The procedure is performed by a multidisciplinary team comprised of a respirologist, nurses and respiratory technicians.

The less invasive nature of the procedure has a number of benefits for patients, most notably few side effects and better recovery. Patients return home the same day and follow-up is provided jointly by the CLSC and the Hospital’s pleural clinic team.

Yes! I want to support the patients at Hôpital Charles-Le Moyne.
