An increasing number of Quebecers are asking how they can contribute to building a better world, even after they\u2019re gone. Planned giving is a discreet but very meaningful option: a thoughtful gesture that reflects your values and honours your community.<\/p>\n

During\u00a0Leave a Legacy Month<\/strong>,\u00a0it\u2019s important to remember that each and every one of us can\u00a0leave a lasting mark<\/strong>.\u00a0This is often achieved by taking a critical step:\u00a0writing a will. This is the expression of your deepest wishes for the future once you\u2019re gone\u2026 and can include a meaningful donation that passes on the values you wish to share.<\/p>\n

Now is an opportune time to think about this. Qu\u00e9bec is currently in the process of its greatest legacy transfer ever. Thousands of people\u2014many of them baby boomers\u2014are preparing to transfer their assets to their children. And what if this transfer, often familial, also became a\u00a0gesture of solidarity?<\/p>\n

Including an organization in your will, naming a foundation as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy, or incorporating a donation in your financial planning\u00a0is a concrete way to prolong your commitment, without compromising the legacy you leave for your loved ones.<\/p>\n

And yet, planned giving is still rare. In Qu\u00e9bec,\u00a051% of citizens don\u2019t know what planned giving is<\/strong>. And among those who\u2019ve heard of it, only\u00a04% have acted on it<\/strong>, while\u00a07% plan on doing it one day\u00a0<\/strong>(\u00c9pisode,\u00a0Tendances en philanthropie au Qu\u00e9bec<\/em>, 2024).<\/p>\n

As long as planned giving is left out of the conversation about legacy, it will continue to be a missed opportunity. The discomfort surrounding death and estate planning partly explains why\u00a0close to 50% of Quebecers don\u2019t have a will<\/strong>\u00a0(according to a CROP\u2013L\u2019actualit\u00e9<\/em>\u00a0poll conducted in October 2016). So many obstacles to planned giving, and yet it could be such a meaningful way to pass on your values.<\/p>\n
